"You will either master the pistol or the pistol will master you."

To fire perfect shots, you must train for perfect shots. But whether you want to shoot squirrels, punch holes in paper targets, or defend your home, there is only one path to achieving consistent accuracy with a handgun mastering the fundamentals of marksmanship. Written by a former U.S. Marine Corps firearms instructor who has taught more than a thousand law enforcement, military, and security personnel, The Perfect Pistol Shot uses succinct lessons, uncommon exercises, and real-world stories to provide a fresh look at a vital topic for all gunmen. It includes
  • The single most important "trick" to perfecting handgun marksmanship
  • A simple concept for learning how to shoot a gun twice as fast
  • A series of unique "Prove It" exercises that allow you to test the concepts offered without the pressure of actual shooting
  • An entertaining chapter on guns, gun magazines, and gun gurus that will help you make wiser choices about your training
Knowing how to engage targets is valuable for the defensive shooter, but if "engaging" doesn't translate into "hitting," what's the point? You must have a solid foundation on which to build tactical skills. Your reward will be conversion from just another hapless shooter into an independent marksman.

Tells you what to do, why you should do it, and how to do it. According to the author, much of what people think discharging a firearm involves is actually counterintuitive. Whereas first time shooters may hold on excessively to a firearm due to fear of recoil, this excessive force may throw off the shot due to the excess force translating into movement of the barrel. Likewise in most sports, one must focus on the target to achieve the goal, to make the basket, or to pass to the receiver. However, focusing on the target (for a beginner shooter) may actually cause you to miss the target or hit way off your intended mark because you are unaware that your barrel moved off target at the very last millisecond before the shot was released. For example, many instructors will say "watch the front sight", but they do not explain why it is important to do so. Others may say "trigger control is more important than aligning your sights" because if you are unable to engage your trigger without disturbing your alignment, then all your alignment is for naught. Here however, the author of The Perfect Shot says that fanatical and intense attention and focus on your front sight is imperative both before, during, and for 3 seconds after the shot is discharged because the shot will go exactly where the front sight is pointed and by continually focusing on your front sight, your eye will receive continual real-time feedback on where and exactly when your barrel is moving off target which in turn will allow you the information necessary to self-correct your shot BEFORE the projectile leaves the barrel as opposed to diagnosing mistakes after a miss or after an errant shot hits way off your intended mark. Trigger management is also important he states, however fanatical focus on the front sight is more important because the front sight will tell you exactly when and why your trigger engagement is causing you problems well before the shot is made allowing you the opportunity to modify or adjust your trigger engagement so that your sight alignment is maintained. Absolutely worth the money for the serious beginner student of firearms. The book is a very short read, only 113 pages, yet it is packed with concise, theoretical knowledge in easy to read, easy to understand prose. Excellent explanations. The author is a very good teacher and provides a great example of what an instructional text should be. The only downside is the lack of diagrams for some of the concepts which would aid visual learners. However even without such diagrams, visual learners will not be dissapointed. PHOTOS: Pink target was 3 weeks prior to reading "The Perfect Pistol Shot" (30 rounds at 7 yards using M&P 9 mm). The next three targets were shot on the same day, all AFTER reading "The Perfect Pistol Shot" (all with M&P 9 mm). 10 rounds at 7 yards, then 10 rounds at 10 yards, then 4 rounds shot rapid fire at 7 yards.

The Perfect Pistol Shot Albert H League III 9781610045711 Books Reviews

This book will benefit beginning as well experienced pistol shooters. I’m a pretty decent shooter but my shots were consistently hitting to the left of where I was aiming. After implementing the skills I learned in this book my shots are now hitting where I aim. The chapters on front sight focus, grip and and trigger control were especially helpful. Practice and implement the principles and skills in this book and you will be a much more successful shooter.
I have went through this book twice so far. The second time around things became much clearer.
I'm going back through and highlighting the particulars that apply to me.
Pretty awesome little book, probably one of the best I've read on the subject.
AUGUST 10, 2014 UPDATE
Because The Perfect Pistol Shot is such a condensed read, you may not see the forest for the trees.
I have been going back to it and as suggested I put it in my range bag. Each time I review through the pages I find little pearls of information. Lately though, I have been investing more time into the 'Prove It' sections and they have turned up the heat in my shooting quite a bit.
I was always able to reasonably place hits on bullseye and silhouettes before, but now the accuracy and grouping has improved dramatically and I don't have to go through a box of 50 for results.
For the macho shooters that claim that this book is for beginners I doubt seriously that they are anywhere within the 10% of accurate shooters. This book is an excellent buy if you study it and follow the flow of information.
You should see the looks I get at the range.
The meat and potatoes of this book are chapters 2 thru 7, which covers sighting (vision, sight alignment and sight picture), trigger control and grip, body alignment and natural point of aim, breathing, instruction on meshing these skills together to achieve the perfect pistol shot, and training and error correction (self coaching). Other related hand gun skills such as drawing from a holster, speed reloading techniques, gun presentation, etc, are not addressed. The focus of this book is solely on the act of shooting the handgun. More specifically, it deals with basic bulls-eye shooting, that is, standing stationary and shooting at a stationary target. Yet another way of saying this is marksmanship. Marksmanship is the mandatory basic building block for learning the more advanced tactical skills of defensive shooting and competitive shooting. So this is an excellent book for learning marksmanship, which is necessary to master in order to move on to tactical shooting.
I have to disagree with the previous review from " Customer" made on Feb 06, 2017. I also have read this book cover to cover and practiced the drills. "Accuracy hindered" negative, "frustrated at the range" again negative. My accuracy has improved as well as consistency after applying the principals from this book. My shooting buddies have changed my nick name to the surgeon. I couldn't be happier with the results and given the cost of ammo these days I consider this purchase as money well spent.
I don't shoot. It's just not my thing. My husband however has a passion for it and goes target shooting every chance he gets. I got him this book for Father's day and he kind of looked at me like I had a screw loose to think I would know enough about shooting to choose a book that would do him any good. (okay - in fairness, he didn't actually say that - but wive's know these things.) It sat untouched for a couple of weeks and then I caught him reading it. Alternating between aiming his "finger gun" at the TV and then going back to the book. He would read it, go the range and try what he'd learned, come home and do the process with the next chapter. He had to admit that I'd made a really good (lucky) choice with this book. He learned a lot of helpful tips and it has improved his shot. I don't know if he has the "Perfect Pistol Shot" yet - but by his own admission - he's a lot closer.
